When Joseph first became aware of the impact of music against images, he was inspired to create. But growing up in a place without a film program, he turned to the stage, composing incidental music for plays throughout high school and college. He began his musical study on piano and later to playing trumpet and French horn in the school band, and singing in the choir. He discovered a passion for oboe and earned a degree in oboe performance from Boise State University.

His music is story-oriented. Even in a concert piece, there’s a journey that takes place. He is skilled in creating melodies or motives that fit the underlying emotion, and he often incorporates synth and electronic sounds into an orchestral palette to achieve a wide variety of shifting timbres and impactful harmonies.
